The national team selections for the March international window are beginning to be released, and with that, it has been announced that seven VfL Wolfsburg players will be called up to their national teams, all for crucial UEFA Nations League matches.
The Danish Football Association reports that full-back Joakim Mæhle, right-back Mads Roerslev, winger Andreas Skov Olsen, and forward Jonas Wind have all been named to the Danish national team for the UEFA Nations League quarterfinal matches against Portugal on Thursday, 20 March (home) and Sunday, 23 March (away). All four play for VfL Wolfsburg at the club level.
Mæhle, who arrived from Serie A side Atalanta in August 2023 for a €12,2 million fee, has registered three goals and three assists in nineteen matches for Die Wölfe, his most recent contributions being a pair of each in a 5-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on 14. January. This is Mæhle's first window where he can contribute since October, where he only played 4 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Switzerland.
Roerslev, who joined Wolfsburg on loan from Premier League side Brentford at the end of January, has played a total of 253 minutes in five of the club's last six Bundesliga matches, and has been decent on both sides of the field since arriving, with a 90% success rate from tackles and an 83% success rate from passes. He made his first international cap for Denmark on 18. November, playing the full 90 minutes in a scoreless draw with Serbia.
Skov Olsen, also arrived in January, on a €14 million transfer from Jupiler Pro League side Club Brugge, and has played in six of Wolfsburg's eight matches since joining; he has one assist, that being on Patrick Wimmer's first goal against SV Werder Bremen through a corner kick. He played 56 minutes in four of Denmark's six Nations League group matches.
As for Wind, who joined from FC Copenhagen on a €12 million fee just over three years ago, he has contributed eight goals and three assists for Wolfsburg this season, second on the team (only Mohamed Amoura has more, with 10). He played 33 minutes in Denmark's 2-2 draw with Switzerland in October, and was on the bench in November.
Also representing his national team is Patrick Wimmer, who will be wearing the colours of Austria in this international window in their Nations League promotion playoff against Serbia. He has been in fine form recently, coming off a two-goal performance against Werder Bremen that was followed by a brief illness. He has played in all six of Austria's Nations League group matches, but has not registered a goal or assist since 4. June 2024, which was, coincidentally, a 2-1 win against Serbia in a friendly.
Konstantinos Koulierakis had his name called to the Greece national team for their promotion playoff matches against Scotland. He has played the full 90 minutes at centre-back in all six of Wolfsburg's most recent matches, achieving consensus match ratings of 7 or higher in four of his last seven matches. With the Ethniki, he has two assists in his last three starts, against England and Finland.
Also making headlines is Bence Dárdai, who could be making his first appearances for Hungary since switching from Germany to join his brothers. Their side faces Türkiye with the being aim to remain in League A. Dárdai played 27 minutes in the most recent match, a 1-1 draw with FC St. Pauli, and 65 minutes in the 2-1 win against Werder Bremen in the LCM position.
For certain players, their national teams have yet to make announcements. These are Algeria (Amoura), Belgium (Bornauw/Vranckx), France (Angely), Poland (Białek/Grabara/Kamiński), Portugal (Tomás), Sweden (Svanberg), and Slovakia (Vavro). Some of these teams have already announced that they will be releasing their squads Wednesday or Thursday.
Lovro Majer (Croatia), Kevin Paredes (United States), and Rogério (Brazil) are all injured and unfit to play in their national team matches.
