One target who INEOS ultimately opted against pursuing in the January window has now ‘decided to leave’ his current club.

The player in question is none other than Chelsea frontman Christopher Nkunku, whose Stamford Bridge tenure has majorly fallen short of expectations.

Now in his second season at the club, the French international has made just 11 Premier League starts in total; initially because of unrelenting injury setbacks, but now primarily due to the attacking depth Enzo Maresca has at his disposal.

Time to go: Nkunku prepares for premature Chelsea exit

Nkunku’s stagnant form in blue wasn’t enough to deter United from registering their interest back in the winter, with numerous outlets at the time – including Fabrizio Romano – confirming the Red Devils had added him to their shortlist after sanctioning the exits of Antony, Marcus Rashford and Ethan Wheatley, leaving only Amad, Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund to see out the campaign up front.

Despite featuring more prominently in Nicolas Jackson’s absence since February, the striker has been absent for Chelsea’s last three league outings, being omitted from the squad entirely for fixtures against Fulham (April 20) and Liverpool (yesterday). He was, however, an unused substitute for the visit of Everton on April 26.

Injury-prone Nkunku isn’t an ideal target for fans

Alas, it’s safe to say Nkunku, whom compatriot Thierry Henry ‘loves’ watching play, has his sights set on a new venture away from the Blues.

Whether United will revive their interest amidst INEOS’ ongoing No.9 search remains to be seen. If it were up to the fans, they certainly wouldn’t.

Over the weekend, Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg divulged Nkunku’s plans to leave Chelsea, adding there’ ‘no longer any doubt’ about his impending sale, with ‘talks ongoing’ to find a swift resolution sooner rather than later.
