The most assists in a Premier League season

Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal, 2007/08 (17)

Cesc Fabregas was the face of post-Invincibles Arsenal, with the Spanish schemer leading a new wave of talent in North London. Fabregas broke into the team as a teenager and never looked back, quickly becoming the creative hub of Arsene Wenger’s side.

In 2007/08, he led an inexperienced side’s title challenge. After the exit of Thierry Henry, the Spaniard stepped up. Fabregas ended the campaign with seven goals and 17 assists, as Arsenal finished just four points behind champions Manchester United.

He was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, winning the latter.

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool, 2024/25 (17*)

Salah’s 17th assist of the season arrived against Newcastle and took the Egyptian into this elite list. It’s been a phenomenal season for Salah, who has inspired Liverpool’s push for the title. He leads the league for goals (25) and assists (17) with the latter return the highest of his career.

At 32, there’s an argument that Salah is better than ever. Given just how good he’s been across eight seasons at Liverpool, that’s some statement.

Frank Lampard, Chelsea, 2004/05 (18)

Frank Lampard was the driving force in Chelsea’s drought-breaking title success in 2004/05. Jose Mourinho’s side are often famed for their record-low 15 goals conceded but it was Lampard who was the difference-maker at the other end.

He scored 13 goals from midfield and added 18 assists, making him a fitting winner of the FWA Footballer of the Year Award.

Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea, 2014/15 (18)

A second inclusion on this list for Cesc Fabregas. After the lure of home had taken Fabregas to Spain with Barcelona, Chelsea sought to bring the midfielder back to English football. The Blues agreed a fee in the region of £30m for Fabregas in 2014, which proved money well spent.

His first season saw Fabregas star as Chelsea won the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho. He led the league for assists and formed a devastating understanding with fellow recruit Diego Costa. His assist for Andre Schurrle in the season-opener against Burnley remains one of the best in Premier League memory.

Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City, 2016/17 (18)

A name that has featured regularly at the top of the assist charts.

Kevin De Bruyne has led the Premier League for assists on four occasions, with the first of those campaigns in 2016/17. After a modest first season at Manchester City, De Bruyne exploded under the management of Pep Guardiola.

He’s currently second for all-time Premier League assists, behind only Ryan Giggs.

Mesut Ozil, Arsenal, 2015/16 (19)

Mesut Ozil came within a whisker of matching the single-season record during an outstanding 2015/16 season at Arsenal.

The German playmaker created 19 goals for the Gunners, the most productive campaign of his time in North London. Ozil’s has topped the Bundesliga (2009/10), La Liga (2011/12) and Premier League (2015/16) for assists in a season.

Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City, 2019/20 (20)

Kevin De Bruyne equalled the Premier League’s single-season assist record in 2019/20.

He became just the second player to reach 20 assists in a Premier League season and the first player in history to reach 20 assists in a single season in two of Europe’s top five leagues (also Germany).

At the end of the campaign, De Bruyne was named PFA Player of the Year, becoming the first Manchester City player to win the award.

Thierry Henry, Arsenal, 2002/03 (20)

Thierry Henry was the first Premier League player to reach 20 assists in a campaign.

Henry delivered one of the all-time great individual seasons in 2002/03, as he became the first footballer to score 20+ goals and record 20+ assists in a single campaign. It’s an achievement yet to be matched, while only Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (2019/20) has equalled that feat in a top-five European league this century.

Greatness.
