January rolls on, and there is more than enough transfer chatter to keep up entertained on a sleepy Sunday.
The focus at Chelsea is on selling players at the moment, but there’s still plenty of chatter about players coming in, either in the summer or this month.
One name that cropped up for the first time this week, mentioned by Fabrizio Romano, was Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund. He’s apparently an option being seriously by Chelsea, who are watching his phenomenal development in the Bundesliga with interest.
German insider Florian Plettenberg today claimed that both Chelsea and Man United are on the list of interested teams chasing the young English talent. Buying him this month looks impossible – Dortmund simply have too much to play for, and Chelsea haven’t managed to get any sales over the line yet. But this feels like a story that will only grow towards the summer.
Between Gittens, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, there’s a very interesting strain of partly-English produced youngsters being linked with us right now.

The key to the whole deal seems to be the conditional that Plettenberg throws in at the end there:
“If Borussia Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League, the departure of the 20-year-old top talent becomes highly likely.”
Chelsea don’t need them to fail to make it into the Champions League, but it would certainly clear the way for a move and make it much more likely, as Plettenberg says.
Of course, the Blues have to keep up their end of the deal and get into the competition themselves… a win tomorrow night would be very helpful in that respect as we look to get back into gear.
