Theo Hernandez admits Milan players must take ‘some of the blame’ for Paulo Fonseca’s dismissal, but both he and Tammy Abraham celebrate Sergio Conceicao’s Supercoppa Italiana impact.

It was a thrilling Supercoppa Italiana Final in Riyadh, as favourites Inter had been leading 2-0 until the 51st minute with Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi scoring either side of half-time.

However, Rafael Leao came off the bench and even not fully fit, he made a huge difference by inspiring all three goals in the 3-2 triumph.

The Portugal international earned the free kick fired in by Theo Hernandez, started the move that Theo Hernandez set up for Christian Pulisic and then provided the assist for the last-gasp Tammy Abraham tap-in.

“I am very happy for my team, for the fans and this is for all of you,” Abraham told Sport Mediaset, waving his Man of the Match trophy.

“We played with confidence, with courage, hunger, so when we do that, we are a strong side. We are very happy.”

It has been a tough campaign for Milan, who fired coach Paulo Fonseca just days before the Supercoppa Italiana trip to Saudi Arabia, but new boss Sergio Conceicao oversaw thrilling comeback victories over Juventus and now Inter.

There was famously tension between Rafael Leao, Theo Hernandez and Fonseca, so it is perhaps no huge surprise that these two players flourished following his dismissal.

“It was a great performance. We knew Inter were a great team, it was a difficult moment for me, but I think that now I am getting back in shape. I am not yet at 100 per cent, but I am trying to help the team,” Theo Hernandez told Sport Mediaset.

“It is wonderful. We need to shoulder some of the blame that Fonseca went, it was not just his fault. We are grateful to have had him here and wish him the best. We haven’t had much time to work with Conceicao, but I think it did us good.

“I dedicate the goal to my wife, my son and now the little girl is coming soon too to grow the family.”
