BVB delivered a convincing performance in mid-week as they beat OSC Lille away from home and qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Now they are up against Rasenballsport Leipzig, a "Champions League team" as Niko Kovac put it, in the Bundesliga. "We have a very strong opponent coming up who will also need to perform, so I hope that we will play exactly the same way as we did in Lille," explained the BVB coach, who will only be without the duo of Felix Nmecha and Daniel Svensson and can count on the same squad that he had in the Champions League. "I want to see the willingness to run, the commitment and the sense of togetherness \u2013 all the things that made us strong in the game against Lille. Because that's the prerequisite for ultimately getting a good result."<\/p>\n

BVB picked up a good result in the reverse fixture, coming from 1-0 down to win 2-1 at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK at the beginning of November. Maximilian Beier restored parity at 1-1 with his first goal for the Black & Yellows. The striker was also involved in the winning goal, which he set up: Beier laid the ball off to Serhou Guirassy, who asserted himself against two Leipzig players in the middle and headed home to make it 2-1.<\/p>\n

Leipzig were second in the table back then. Now the Saxony outfit are in sixth position. They have won two of their 10 Bundesliga matches in this calendar year, while six games have ended in stalemate and two in defeat. They have reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal but their Champions League campaign ended in the league phase. "Leipzig didn't play in mid-week so the freshness will certainly be there. We will be challenged from the very first minute, but it must also be up to us to challenge our opponents on the ball and off the ball," said Kovac, adding: "We saw against Lille how important it is to be proactive and put the opposition under pressure even off the ball in order to then create good opportunities."<\/p>\n

Leipzig remain a "top opponent" in Kovac's eyes, even though they "certainly are not where they would like to be" and although "they are perhaps not performing as well as they would like at the moment".
