Tom Brady and Tom Wagner were caught in an in-depth discussion with their Birmingham City players.
Birmingham City owners, Tom Brady and Tom Wagner, were seen ranting to their players after Peterborough United defeated the Blues 2-0 in the EFL Trophy Final.
It was a harrowing day at Wembley for Chris Davies' side after a superb season which saw them clinch the League One title on Saturday after Wrexham's 0-0 draw with Wigan Athletic.
Travelling down from the Second City, Birmingham arrived at the national stadium as clear favourites — but failed to rise to the occasion in one of their biggest matches of the season.
In a display uncharacteristic of the Blues, they struggled to control the tempo, and it was Peterborough who struck first. Nineteen-year-old Harley Mills curled a superb free-kick past Ryan Allsop to give the underdogs a deserved lead.
Darren Ferguson, a two-time winner of this competition as manager, had his side well-drilled, with Archie Collins and Hector Kyprianou keeping tabs on Tomoki Iwata and Seung-Ho Paik, denying them any time or space on the ball.
Their efforts were eventually rewarded when a dangerous Mills cross caused chaos in the Birmingham defence, and the Posh’s Cypriot captain pounced to fire home a delightful second from the edge of the box.
The Blues toiled in the second half, but Peterborough stood firm, with Ferguson guiding the club to a third EFL Trophy triumph.
Having collected their runners-up medals after the match, Brady and Wagner pulled the Birmingham players aside for an in-depth discussion.
The exact nature of the conversation remains unclear, but judging by the group’s gestures, it appeared to be an encouraging message to the squad.
Under the current ownership, Birmingham are a club on the rise. While they’ll no doubt have ambitions of returning to Wembley in the near future, they’ll be determined to avoid the disappointment they felt on Sunday evening and will be better for the defeat.
Having fallen at the final hurdle, many supporters were surprised to see the pair so heavily involved with the Birmingham City players after the match, and took to social media to share their views.
Plenty were pleased to see the club’s owners having their say, with many arguing they have earned the right to do so given the progress made under their stewardship over the past 12 months.
However, not everyone shared that sentiment, with some suggesting it was merely a publicity stunt for the cameras, especially in light of the Blues’ recent announcement of their new Amazon Prime documentary.
Nevertheless, attention must now turn to the remaining six fixtures of the campaign, with hopes of securing a record points tally for the club.
