Tottenham Hotspur have not given up their pursuit of Chelsea defender Axel Disasi as they bid to bolster the rearguard for manager Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs’ starting centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have spent a large portion of the season out with injuries.
Radu Dragusin has also picked up an injury, potentially ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Tottenham need reinforcements for the backline and are pushing to get a loan move for Disasi over the line.
According to the Telegraph, Spurs have reportedly agreed a deal with the Blues but need to convince the player about making the switch.
Journalist Matt Law said: “Disasi has been reluctant to join Tottenham, instead favouring a proposed move to Aston Villa, which led to Spurs looking at alternative targets.
“But negotiations have restarted, and Spurs are now making a new move to convince the player.”
As Postecoglou did with Mathys Tel, the Spurs boss needs to convince the Frenchman to come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tottenham’s move for Disasi reeks of desperation. The former AS Monaco man does not particularly defend wide space well. This weakness will be exposed in Postecoglou’s gung-ho football.
While the France international is strong and athletic, he fails to read dangerous situations before they escalate.
There is a reason why Chelsea would rather keep inexperienced Aaron Anselmino from going on loan to Marseille while looking to shift Disasi off their books. Spurs need to be wiser with their £5 million loan fee.
Unfortunately, the timing and the stringency of the market make any alternative option unlikely.
However, Tottenham fans should not get excited about signing Disasi if the deal happens. He is not the man to plug the club’s defensive leaks.
