Manchester United are mulling over where Marcus Rashford will be playing his football when 2025/2026 gets underway.

As it stands, he remains contracted to Aston Villa until the end of June, although he’s already played his final game for the club due to a hamstring injury he sustained in the build-up to the FA Cup semi-final, in which Unai Emery’s side were defeated by eventual winners Crystal Palace.

Villa have the option of signing Rashford, 27, permanently for £40 million. However, a five-year deal, according to Football Insider, could result in the club paying a whopping £130m to initially add him to the books and subsequently pay his costly salary.

Why Rashford will struggle to seal desired transfer

The forward’s £325,000-a-week wages are proving to be detrimental in his hopes of sealing a new venture this summer, as most sides are simply unwilling to meet his demands.

He was granted the lucrative deal following a career-best goalscoring campaign in 2022/2023 when he netted 30 goals in all competitions. However, Rashford followed up the stellar term by scoring just eight times in 43 appearances throughout 2023/2024.

Rashford’s unexpected exile under Ruben Amorim culminated with him being shipped to Villa Park in the winter window, and he proceeded to revive his stagnant career with some impressive showings under Emery. In the 17 matches he played in before his injury layoff, he scored four goals and assisted a further six.

Rashford’s Old Trafford career is a closed chapter

In regards to his options this summer, Tottenham Hotspur are said to be longstanding admirers of the 62-capped England international, while Barcelona is reportedly his dream destination.

Ex-United chief scout Mick Brown weighed in on Rashford’s uncertain situation when speaking with FI, assuring that there is little to no chance of him donning the red, white and black of his boyhood club again.

“It’s going to be difficult for Man United to move him on,” he began. “Ideally, United want to raise money from his sale, but they’ve handled it badly.

“He’s not going to come back, so he has to be moved on, whether that’s permanently or on loan. There are only three or four teams that could realistically make a move for him.

“But even those teams, there are questions about whether they can afford him and whether he would take a pay cut to make the move.”
