Tottenham head to Germany on Thursday to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their Europa League last-eight tie at Deutsche Bank Park, with the score locked at 1-1 following last Thursday’s first leg at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs had to come from behind in that contest a week ago and things will be even harder in the decider this week.
The second leg will kick-off at 20:00 on Thursday, April 17 and will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 3 and Discovery +.
Tottenham (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bergvall, Bentancur, Maddison; Johnson, Solanke, Son.
Pedro Porro was Spurs’ saviour last week with a well-timed equaliser and he is likely to be restored to the starting line-up for this clash having been left on the bench for the weekend defeat at Wolves in the Premier League.
Wilson Odobert played no part at the weekend, while Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven were also left on the bench at Molineux as Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou protected his key man with this clash in mind.
More crucially though, skipper Heung-Min Son is a doubt for this trip to Frankfurt with a foot injury which saw him play no part in the 4-2 loss at Wolves. Dejan Kulusevski is waiting in the wings should Son be absent, but Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin remain sidelined in defence.
Postecoglou was confident in the build-up to this clash that the Korean would be fit enough to feature, but whether Son can start the match remains to be seen.
The pressure is building on Postecoglou following a poor showing in the Premier League this term and it is widely felt that Spurs must win the Europa League if the Australian is to survive in his job at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham started the week 15th in the English top-flight following a run of just one win from their last six league matches. Even glory in this competition may not be enough to prolong Postecoglou’s tenure in the Spurs hotseat but history isn’t on the beleaguered boss’ side.
Spurs have lost on six of their last seven trips to Germany in the knockout stages of a European competition, and they have failed to score in four of the last five of those fixtures.
The most recent of those came in 2020, when RB Leipzig thumped Spurs 3-0 in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Only once in 10 attempts have Spurs advanced from a European tie after failing to win at home in the first leg and five defeats from their last seven on the road in Europe show why there is a pessimistic air about their chances this week.
Six defeats from seven away games across all competitions for Postecoglou’s men makes for miserable reading and they will need to be at their very best to prolong their European adventure in this campaign.
