Leeds United have regained the top spot in the Championship after beating Millwall 2-0 on Wednesday night at Elland Road.
After two disappointing results against West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth, the Whites returned to winning ways with a brilliant performance.
Sheffield United leapfrogged them with a 1-1 draw against Bristol City on Tuesday, but Leeds have now taken a two-point lead (and four-point gap with third-placed Burnley) over them in the battle for automatic promotion.
Leeds took an early lead inside three minutes in a rather fortuitous way when Manor Solomon’s effort was deflected off the knee of Jake Cooper and past goalkeeper Lukas Jensen for an own goal. It set the tone for the rest of the game.
Ao Tanaka completed the victory in the 85th minute with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box.
Several Leeds players performed well during the game, but one player who really impressed everyone was Joe Rothwell.
The 30-year-old midfielder, who joined the Whites on loan from AFC Bournemouth, came into the side in place of Ilia Gruev and produced a top-quality performance.
Leeds Live described him as the “main engine” and gave him a 9/10 rating.
They wrote: “Drove well for the first goal in what was United’s first attack of the game and was the main engine of many more forays forward. Set-pieces were a bit askew, though. Showed some brilliant touches in the second half.”
Rothwell registered 90% passing accuracy and completed 100% dribbles. He also won a 100% aerial duel and produced two key passes.
The midfielder also made one tackle and two interceptions to cap off a fantastic overall performance. With less than ten games left in the season, Leeds need to win most of them to secure an automatic promotion to the Premier League.
The Whites will look to maintain the momentum when they will face Queens Park Rangers away from home in the Championship on Saturday in their next game.
