Leeds United came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers in the Championship on Saturday at Loftus Road.
The Whites were poor in the first half and went two goals down, but they showed great character to level the tie.
The result ensures that Leeds will head to the international break sitting on top of the table, but Sheffield United can go level on points if they win against derby rivals Sheffield Wednesday today.
A poor mistake from Leeds midfielder Brenden Aaronson helped QPR take the lead. The USA international was shockingly poor and received strong criticism from pundits for his performance.
Wilfried Gnonto replaced him at the break, and the Italian played a massive role in Leeds’s strong second-half performance.
His brilliant through-ball to Daniel James led to the equalising goal, and he did everything that was required from someone playing in the #10 role. Both Leeds Live and the Yorkshire Evening Post gave him an 8/10 rating.
Leeds Live noted: “A terrific through-ball to James to spark the equaliser. Very neat play in around the box, which flicks coming off and his spreading of the play was what was needed. A real challenger for the No.10 role now. 8”
Yorkshire Evening Post wrote: “Did everything that you would want a number 10 to do for a team losing by a goal. Urgent, got on the ball, passed it well to create chances, won free-kicks.”
Gnonto has made 20 starts in the Championship this season and 10 appearances from the bench. He has managed five goals and five assists.
Daniel Farke admitted after the game that he made a mistake with team selection and praised Gnonto’s effort. Usually, Gnonto plays on the wings, but he has impressed heavily playing more centrally.
Leeds have recently dropped points against West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth, and they must maintain a healthy momentum after the international break to secure automatic promotion.
