Speaking to Julian Buhl of T-Online, Uli Hoeneß has admitted it was a mistake to sack Julian Nagelsmann as Bayern Munich’s head coach back in March 2023 and has also spoken on his relationship with Thomas Tuchel.
After a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the league, Bayern decided to sack Nagelsmann as their head coach, they replaced him with Thomas Tuchel and would limp to the title and won it due to Dormtund’s incompetence.
On if it was a bigger mistake to sack Nagelsmann or hire Tuchel, Hoeneß said:
“Definitely the hasty dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann, which had not been agreed with the supervisory board for a long time. The supervisory board was more or less presented with a fait accompli”
Adding:
“And that led to unrest at a time when we could still have won all three titles. It was not a catastrophic situation. Who knows what would have happened if Julian had been given the chance. I would have liked these things to have been handled with a little more patience”
Since Nagelsmann’s sacking, he was then appointed German national team manager. During his time as Bundestrainer, Nagelsmann rejuvenated the national team, making them play attractive football as well as allowing Germans to once again fall in love with the national team.
Hoeneß was also asked about his relationship with Tuchel. It is widely known that now, Tuchel and Hoeneß do not get along. During his time at Bayern, Hoeneß criticised Tuchel for the lack of development of the young players, following his hiring as England manager, Bayern’s honorary president then labelled Tuchel’s time at the Allianz Arena as a ‘catastrophe’.
On Tuchel, Hoeneß said:
“Privately, our relationship was fine until the end. But in many areas, he simply has a completely different view of how to lead a team. He also wanted to make relatively many transfers. We wanted to try to work with more of our own players in the medium term.”When I think of how many expensive players were repeatedly called for. Every time we had an injured player, there were calls for new players. It was a permanent discussion about players. I’ve never heard that from Vincent”
Tuchel stayed on as Bayern manager for the next season but they ended up finishing third in the Bundesliga, were eliminated in the DFB Pokal by Freiburg and made it to the Champions League final. When Bayern couldn’t find a coach to replace Tuchel, there was a chance he would have stayed on but no agreement could be reached.
The former Bayern manager will take charge of his first England game in March.
