“Unfortunately…” – Enzo Maresca drops bad injury news on one player you will not be surprised by

The news from Enzo Maresca’s press conference today was largely good. In injury terms, he confirmed the long awaited return of Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson to the squad.
He called his situation on the fitness front “very good” after months of struggles.
“We’ve said many times, it is a game for players and when they are not there, you struggle. This has happened with us this season. Now it is good to finish with all of them,” the coach confirmed.
But it’s not all good news – the group is not complete – you’ll never guess who’s now had a setback.
Romeo Lavia has only been at Chelsea for less than two years, but is already picking up a reputation as one of our most injury prone players. At least the likes of Reece James and Ben Chilwell had big serious injuries – Lavia always seems to be 3 games away from returning, but never quite makes it.
“He was doing better in terms of progress but unfortunately one or two days ago he had a small problem, so we will see in the next hours,” Maresca said of the Belgian.

Chelsea’s squad this season was not well constructed in some regards. The fact that we put faith in Lavia to stay fit and provide cover and options in midfield was clearly a mistake.
The good news is that the Blues are adding a lot of depth in the summer, with Dario Essugo joining in time for the Club World Cup, Andrey Santos likely to be recalled from loan, plus the likes of Lesley Ugochukwu still on the books.
As for Lavia – let’s hope his third season is an improvement on his first and second.
