Danny Collins thinks that unless there is a dramatic turnaround, Sheffield United will now be joining his former club Sunderland in the playoffs in the Championship, following the Blades’ collapse in form.

Chris Wilder’s men have suffered a terrible past few weeks as they have lost three matches on the bounce, which has seen the club drop down to third position in the Championship table.

The Blades’ most recent 2-1 defeat on Saturday against bottom side Plymouth Argyle has almost killed their chances of finishing inside the top two as Leeds United and Burnley have established a five-point lead over Wilder’s men.

With only four matches remaining before the Championship season concludes, Collins believes Sheffield United would need a huge meltdown from the Whites or the Clarets to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Collins feels the Blades are destined to play playoffs alongside his former side Sunderland as he expects Leeds and Burnley to not drop out of the top two spots.

Collins said on SAFC Live (5:38): “It is getting away from Sheffield United, all of a sudden, isn’t it?

“Look at that gap there, five points isn’t it to those two? So, I think you are looking at Burnley and Leeds.

“Sheffield United are going to be joining us [Sunderland] in the playoffs, unless there is a dramatic turnaround.”

If the playoff places finish as they are then Sunderland and Sheffield United would avoid each other in the semi-final stage, but could then potentially meet in the final.

Sheffield United beat Sunderland 1-0 at Bramall Lane in November, but the Black Cats came out on top 2-1 when the two sides met in early January at the Stadium of Light.

The Blades’ remaining games this season come against Cardiff City, Burnley, Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers.
