Thomas Tuchel has just announced his second England squad, and there is just one previously uncapped name in there – Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.
Chalobah’s career has long been tied to Tuchel since the German coach gave him the first team chance he needed at Stamford Bridge, and now he’s done the same for England too.
Speaking to the FA’s media channels, Tuchel explained his decision.
Thomas Tuchel speaks about calling up Trevoh Chalobah.
“We have some injuries in central defence, and Trevoh has stepped up massively since he came back to Chelsea, so since our last camp, even before, he was already on our radar,” the England manager said.
“But since the last camp, in the last few months he had a major contribution to the run of Chelsea that they’re still fighting for the Champions League, and he was one of their most consistent and best defenders, so we think he deserved the call up, and maybe he will get his first cap.”
Tuchel also mentioned Chalobah in his press conference, saying he “deserves it… he played a fantastic second half of the season” and is “very, very consistent at a high level.”
You can see the manager speaking in the clip embedded here:
Chalobah has indeed been very good since coming back from his loan at Crystal Palace in January. Just as last year, and the year before, and the year before, he doesn’t seem to ever be trusted as a long term option, yet outperforms his colleagues and everyone’s expectations when given a chance.
Whatever happens in the future, we’re just so happy for Trevoh getting this special moment, and we hope he gets on the pitch too to make it even better.
