Andre Onana hasn’t minced his words when previewing Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final against Olympique Lyonnais.

Now, he wants to hope it doesn’t come back to bite him in the behind.

The Red Devils take to France this week ahead of the first leg of their European tie, which is penned in for Thursday evening at 8pm. They enter the clash winless in their last two Premier League matches, having fallen to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest and a 0-0 stalemate in yesterday’s Manchester derby.

While the matches have been anything but entertaining, there’s certainly a case to be made for United playing better football. They haven’t been leaking goals anywhere near as much, and Bruno Fernandes is overseeing yet another world-class personal campaign.

As for Thursday’s hosts, they currently sit fifth-placed in Ligue 1. Lyon have won 14 league matches this term, drawing six and losing eight, with ex-Arsenal frontman Alexandre Lacazette scoring 11 goals in that time.

At this stage of either club’s seasons, both will be prioritising Europa League success – particularly United, as winning the competition is their only shot at playing in Europe in 2025/2026.

“It’s a very good team. We know some of them but I don’t think we have to focus on them. It’s more about us, what we’re going to do,” said Onana, whose form has left much to be desired in his sophomore year at Old Trafford.

“I think we are better than them, we just have to go there and show who we are. If we go there with a winning mentality, and we are focused, stay compact and together and we follow the game plan, we will be winning the game.

“Of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them. We all know the importance of this game, we will go there with the winning mentality, it’s not our best season but we still have something to win and we will go for it.”
