Ange Postecoglou believes there is a narrative around Spurs that is trying to “set the club up for some sort of fall”.

Tottenham go into their Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday 16th in the table, staring at what possibly could be their worst domestic season ever.

But they remain in with a chance of winning the Europa League, having reached the semi-final stage, and Postecoglou once again hit out at what he called the “hysteria” around the club.

“We still might [achieve something] mate,” he said.

“I love the frenzy around finishing fifth this year, they are all brilliant aren’t they. We finished fifth last year. Why is it such a disaster that we finished fifth?

“That is what you need to ask everyone and yourselves. In fact, around this time last year I was asked to lose a game, and I was wrong for wanting to win it.

“We finished fifth last year but it is not a good story, the better story is that my tenure has been a disaster. I just think that the hysteria surrounding what is happening at the club is all premeditated for a certain outcome and hopefully we can defy that.”

The Tottenham boss understands that his team have fallen way short of expectations this season but believes he still has support from some of the fanbase, and insists his main goal is to change the culture of the club.

“There are plenty of people, including Tottenham supporters, who are still very supportive with what I am trying to do even though they are disappointed with the year we have had,” he said.

“I don’t think I feel like it is them against me, it is more about the club. I am trying to change the perception of the club. I do think there is a narrative about trying to set this club up for some sort of fall.

“There is no allowance for any building of foundations for something different than before. The one thing you do know is what does not work here. I am trying to do things differently.

“Some of it has not worked out for sure, some of it has gone disastrously wrong, I accept that. But I said from the start that we need to chart a different course if we are to break the cycle that this club has been in. Bizarrely, we are still in a position where we can do that.”

Postecoglou has come under increasing pressure this season but says he has been in this situation before in his career.

“After I have left clubs, there is always a story about how I was close to losing my job,” he said. “In my first job at South Melbourne 30 odd years ago there are famous stories about a board meeting getting cancelled where I was supposed to get sacked.

“I think that this sort of noise is there to distract us. If you ask any Tottenham supporter what is the most important thing for them right now, who will be the manager or whether they win this thing. 100% of them will say to make sure we get ourselves the best opportunity to create some history.”
