Arsenal have been linked with a deal to sign the former Coventry City star this summer
Viktor Gyokeres departed Coventry City in the summer of 2023 following the club’s failure to secure promotion to the Premier League.
The forward made the switch to Portuguese giants Sporting Clube de Portugal after a strong campaign in the Championship.
The Swede bagged 21 goals, as well as 10 assists, as the Sky Blues finished fifth in the table under Mark Robins.
But a penalty shootout loss to Luton Town led to his departure, with Coventry Live claiming a €20 (£16.9) million deal was agreed between the two clubs.
However, a sell-on clause in the move also means the club could earn another fee this summer if he moves.
Here we take a look at how much that clause could be worth to Coventry this summer…
It was reported by Portuguese outlet O Jogo in November 2023 that a sell-on clause worth 15 per cent was also agreed as part of the deal.
However, it was also believed that this could be reduced to 10 per cent if a fee could be agreed between the two teams.
This was ultimately what happened, with Coventry Live writing in July 2024 that a €1 million (£840,000) agreement was reached to reduce it by five per cent.
This means that Coventry will now receive 10 per cent of any figure that Gyokeres is sold for by the European club.
This comes amid reports of a potential return to English football after two strong seasons with Sporting.
It has been reported by The Mirror that Arsenal are interested in a deal for the striker, as they look to bolster Mikel Arteta’s attacking options for next season.
It is expected that any deal for the player could be worth around £60 million, which would be a positive boost for the Sky Blues.
Coventry could receive up to £6 million if Gyokeres is sold for a fee worth £60 million, which could be used to improve Frank Lampard’s side this summer.
The Championship side will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the situation surrounding the 26-year-old in the coming months.
Gyokeres impressed many with his performances in the Championship, and he has continued to grab attention since moving to Portugal.
He made an instant impact with Ruben Amorim’s side when he arrived, helping Sporting reclaim their title in 2024 after coming third prior to the player’s arrival.
Gyokeres scored a remarkable 29 goals, as well as provided 10 assists, as they finished 10 points clear of Benfica, also qualifying for the Champions League in the process.
Amorim’s departure as manager in November 2024 did not deter Gyokeres’ progress, with the Swedish international improving his goal tally in his second year with the club.
The striker scored 39 times in the Portuguese top flight, while also scoring six from eight appearances in the Champions League.
It’s no surprise that he is garnering such attention from one of Europe’s top clubs given his goal record, and Coventry now stand to profit even further from his sale if he does move on again after just two years with Sporting.
