Why PSG have a difficult route to the Champions League final ?

The international break comes at the worse possible time for Luis Enrique's side. Not only are they cruising in the league but they are on a high after knocking Arne Slot's Liverpool out of the Champions League. They are also still on for a treble as they comprehensively beat Stade Briochin in the quarter finals of the Coupe de France.

The French champions would have preferred no break games as they have good momentum as of late. Despite this, there are still positives to the break as some of the players will be able to have a slight rest ahead of the most crucial stretch of the season. It is a make or break part of the season as the path to the Champions League final is becoming clearer.

Here at PSG Post we discuss why the route to the final is still hard despite progressing past Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League.

They have to get past Aston Villa in the quarterfinal

Les Parisiens will have to play against Aston Villa in the Champions League after they made lightwork of Club Brugge in the last 16. This will be difficult as not only does Unai Emery know most of PSG's players but he has done relatively well in Europe with less fancied sides.

He won the Europa League three times in a row with Sevilla and once with Villarreal. Emery's biggest achievement of them all was taking Villarreal to the semi-final of the Champions League. His Aston Villa side are no different as they have out performed expectations in Europe despite having a very capable squad.

A potential semi final against Arsenal or Real Madrid

If PSG knock out Aston Villa then a semi-final against one of Arsenal or Real Madrid awaits them. Arsenal beat them 2-0 at the Emirates earlier in the competition. In that game the French champions couldn't lay a glove on Mikel Arteta's side. If Real Madrid progress then they will be in for an extremely difficult tie against a side with the most European pedigree. The scariest thing about Ancelotti's side is that they don't need to play well to win games. In the second leg against Atletico they were the second best side before winning the tie on pens.

The final will not get any easier as they will have to face one of Bayern Munich, Inter Milan or Barcelona. They have already lost to Bayern Munich earlier in the competition at the Allianz Arena a game whereby they were toothless. Inter and Barcelona provide two different challenges for Luis Enrique. Barcelona are playing the best football in Europe under Hansi Flick and will want revenge from last season while Inter's defence will be hard to breakdown.
