Don Goodman has given his verdict on Wrexham's potential pursuit of a Leeds United deal this January

Don Goodman believes that Patrick Bamford will not be ready to make the drop down to League One to join Wrexham, should he depart Leeds United this January.

It was reported by Teamtalk in December that the Red Dragons were among the clubs eyeing a potential move for the striker.

It has also been exclusively revealed by Football League World that Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Hardie is also on the club’s radar.

Wrexham are keen to add a new forward to Phil Parkinson’s side before the 3 February deadline amid their push for promotion to the Championship.

Don Goodman gives Patrick Bamford Wrexham verdict

Goodman has claimed that Bamford will have a greater ambition than competing in League One for now.

However, he believes that Hardie could be a smart addition to Parkinson’s team, even suggesting he could earn a pay increase by moving down a division from the Pilgrims.

"With the greatest of respect to Wrexham, it's a brilliant project with all the glitz and glamour, I think Patrick Bamford would have greater ambition from a footballing point of view, as despite them having a brilliant season, it’s possible Wrexham could still be a League One club next season,” said Goodman, via Plejmo.com.

"I could see Ryan Hardie being an attractive option, however.

“Phil Parkinson likes that kind of striker and I'd imagine the player would receive a hefty pay increase despite the fact he'd be dropping down a level."

Patrick Bamford’s future at Leeds

Bamford’s time at Leeds is coming to an end sooner rather than later, with the forward struggling for game time this season.

He is entering the final 18 months of his contract at Elland Road, meaning a permanent sale this month could be on the cards.

Genoa have also been mentioned as a possible next destination, but his lofty wages are seen as a stumbling block to any potential deal this month.

Bamford has played nine times so far this Championship season, coming off the bench on each occasion.

Bamford to Wrexham this January is an ambitious target

Given Wrexham are far from guaranteed to gain promotion this season, it is ambitious to try and sign the Leeds forward.

Hardie is a more realistic target at this stage, even with Bamford’s decline in form and physical fitness.

Adding a forward makes sense, as the team has struggled for a consistent goal scorer with Jack Marriott out.
