West Ham will battle Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday in an especially meaningful match for the Hammers, given the Toffees are now coached by none other than David Moyes. This match is a vital statement game for the Hammers under Graham Potter and an opportunity for a number of embattled players to stand out.
Here are five players on both sides who could be the match deciders this weekend.
The list has to start with Jarrod Bowen, who is the most decisive player in the West Ham side and, still, one of the most effective - and underrated - attacking players in the Premier League.
With all of Niclas Fullkrug, Michail Antonio, and Crysencio Summerville out with injuries, the impetus lies on the shoulders - or, rather, legs - of Bowen to carry the team with tireless ball progression and opportunistic finishing.
No player on West Ham has been a bigger goal threat to the opposition than Bowen, who remains the team's leader with seven goals while providing four assists on the current Premier League season.
One of the men tasked with shutting down Jarrod Bowen will be Everton veteran center back James Tarkowski, who has outshone the young phenom Jarrad Branthwaite by being the most active player in the Everton defense.
Tarkowski has no issues with putting his body on the line for the team. His numbers this season are outstanding with 2.0 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, more than 6 clearances, and 1.3 blocks per game while being dribbled past just 0.5 times per match. He deserves more credit.
While Bowen is the most effective player on West Ham and the best overall, there can be no doubts that Mohammed Kudus is the most talented and has the highest upside.
Whenever he isn't in the lineup for the Irons, they suffer accordingly. Kudus is the one who can make something happen with the magic in his feet, and he's not a bad goal threat either despite still needing experience in the Premier League.
The battle between young guns Kudus and Branthwaite will be a treat to watch, and based on how the two players look this season, Kudus should be the favorite to put the young Englishman on skates.
Idrissa Gueye has proven himself on the Champions League stage in Paris as a key cog in the wheel of a unit that came agonizingly close to hoisting the most prized possession in club football.
Back at Everton, Gueye has been a stalwart defensively for an Everton side just hanging on. He has averaged a team-high 3.9 tackles with 1.2 interceptions per game, more than making up for any lost defensive prowess from the departure of Amadou Onana in the middle of the park.
West Ham can't let Gueye run the show, because he can shut things down on the defensive end while providing more than competent passing.
There's nothing spectacular about veteran midfielder Tomas Soucek's game, but he's become someone the Hammers can rely on and has even chipped in with six goals as a box presence to help minimally offsest the loss of a true No. 9 up top.
Soucek is the counterweight to Gueye's experienced steel in midfield. The Czech international is still undisputed for West Ham despite the presence of two newer names in Edson Alvarez and Guido Rodriguez.
