Christian Titz is reportedly on the radar of Championship clubs as he prepares to leave his role at Magdeburg.
1. FC Magdeburg head coach Christian Titz is reportedly attracting interest from Championship clubs this summer.
That's according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, who claims that Titz is "on the verge of a fresh start away from Magdeburg", with clubs from the second tier believed to be among his suitors.
It is unclear at this stage which clubs are keen on Titz, but Queens Park Rangers, Norwich City, Hull City and West Bromwich Albion are all currently without a manager, while there could be further vacancies to come at Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough amid speculation over the respective futures of Danny Rohl and Michael Carrick.
Titz took over at Magdeburg in February 2021 when the club were in the German third division, and after leading them to promotion in his first full season in charge, his side have continued their rise in recent years.
Magdeburg spent much of this season in and around the promotion places in the 2. Bundesliga, and while they eventually missed out on the play-off spot by five points after winning just one of their final four games, they still finished the campaign in a respectable fifth place.
While Magdeburg will have been disappointed to fall short of the promotion play-off spot, the fact they were even competing for a place in the Bundesliga is an impressive achievement for a club that were playing regional football as recently as 10 years ago, underlining what an excellent job Titz has done at the Avnet Arena.
Since winning promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2022, Titz has led Magdeburg to 11th, 14th and fifth-placed finishes respectively, and this season, they came above many historically bigger clubs with greater financial resources, including the likes of Fortuna Dusseldorf, Kaiserslautern, Hannover 96, Hertha Berlin and Schalke.
Titz is under contract until the summer of 2026, but Plettenberg claims that the 54-year-old is now "ready for a new chapter" and is "expected to be available for a relatively low fee".
Hannover 96, who recently parted company with former Huddersfield Town manager Andre Breitenreiter, are reportedly interested in Titz, but he is also believed to have admirers in the Championship, which is intriguing given the number of vacancies in the division.
After parting company with Johannes Hoff Thorup last month, Norwich have been linked with a host of managers, including Pep Lijnders, Gary O'Neil and Liam Manning, but it remains to be seen whether Titz is on their list of candidates, while he could also emerge as a contender for Hull, who are thought to be eyeing Miron Muslic and Erol Bulut following the surprise sacking of Ruben Selles.
Thorup could be set for a swift return to management after his departure from Carrow Road as he is said to be close to replacing Marti Cifuentes at QPR, but the Dane's appointment at Loftus Road is not yet finalised, meaning Titz could still come into the conversation, and more Championship jobs may become available over the coming weeks.
Magdeburg were one of the surprise packages in the 2. Bundesliga this season, and having topped the away table after picking up 31 of their 53 points on their travels, it is fair to say that they would have claimed the play-off spot or potentially even achieved automatic promotion with a better home record.
Titz has done a transformational job at the Avnet Arena over the past four-and-a-half years, and while there is no guarantee that he would be able to replicate his success in the Championship, he is certainly worthy of consideration by the likes of Norwich and Hull.
Norwich have seen a glimpse of what Titz is capable of after his Magdeburg side won 1-0 at Carrow Road in pre-season, and with the Canaries' reported shortlist looking relatively underwhelming, the former Hamburg and Rot-Weiss Essen manager could be an exciting choice, while he could help Hull to climb the table next term after they only avoided relegation on goal difference this season.
