Arsenal are reportedly set to try offering as much as €80m to win the race for the signing of Sporting Lisbon goal machine Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

The Sweden international looks likely to be a man in demand after a stunning total of 55 goal contributions in all competitions for Sporting this season.

According to Fichajes, it seems expectations are growing inside the Emirates Stadium about the potential signing of Gyokeres to add to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The Gunners clearly need to make changes up front this summer, with neither Kai Havertz or Gabriel Jesus looking like players who can realistically hit 20 goals a season or more.

Gyokeres, by contrast, has a hugely impressive 34 goals in 29 league games so far this term, though of course doing that in the Premier League will be a different kind of challenge.

Arsenal now seem to be emerging as the favourites for Gyokeres, even though there’ll surely be other suitors for the in-form 26-year-old.

Chelsea and Manchester United have also been mentioned as possible rival suitors for Gyokeres, according to a recent report from Just Arsenal.

Still, those clubs are not as big a force as they used to be, with Arsenal now surely the more tempting project for Gyokeres if he wants to win major trophies.

Arsenal look to be on the right track under Arteta, who has had his team in the title race for three years in a row, while the north Londoners also look like serious contenders for the Champions League this season.

Adding an elite goal-scorer like Gyokeres could be an important next step to help AFC finally get their hands on that elusive league title.

One imagines we’ll still see some other names linked with the club, however, as nothing will be decided on signings for a little while longer yet.
