Sheffield Wednesday have been warned they could lose Danny Rohl to Southampton if they don’t match his ambitions.

The German has done a tremendous job at Hillsborough since his arrival last year, initially keeping the club in the Championship against all odds. Now, during his first full campaign in charge, the Owls are in the hunt for a top six place, despite lacking the resources of many of their rivals.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that Rohl has been attracting interest from other clubs, with Southampton having considered him for their head coach role last month.

Southampton could reignite Danny Rohl interest

However, whilst Saints appointed Ivan Juric as Russell Martin’s successor, TalkSPORT has claimed that they could go back in for Rohl next season if they are related, which seems likely.

And, when quizzed on Rohl’s future by FLW, and specifically whether he could see the 35-year-old join Southampton in the Championship, fan pundit Patrick admitted he thinks it’s a real possibility the boss will leave Wednesday.

“I could see Southampton coming in for him again in the summer if it is the case that Juric has a break clause.

“They were obviously very keen on him back in December, and by all accounts this amounted to them making an illegal approach. In the summer, the buyout clause will still be there, so whether that would put them off I don’t know. But, I suspect he is a manager they will greatly admire.

“As for Rohl, the only possible thing to stop him making the move would be if he was unimpressed with how things played out in December and how Southampton approached him.

“However, unfortunately, like many Sheffield Wednesday fans, whichever club it is, I don’t think Rohl will be at Hillsborough at the start of next season.

“Like Southampton, there are clubs that can match the ambitions of Rohl, not just in terms of a better playing squad, but the general infrastructure and planning and vision for running a more modern club.

“So, Rohl I would imagine is going to go to the top. In the summer, if things don’t change, like the vision of the club, and it remains as poor as it is, and he is still expected to scrape by performing miracles with this squad, I think he will be off and there’s not one fan that would blame him if he did.

“It’s a real sense of dread. I love Rohl as a manager, but I just can’t see him staying. Whether it’s Southampton, or a similar club in the summer, even with this release clause, I think someone will activate it, and he will be off.

“My hopes for keeping him are as low as they have ever been after Rohl had to initiate a meeting for any sort of transfers after being thrown under the bus at a fans forum. So, I’m not positive about it, and losing him is something you’re kind of preparing yourself for as a Wednesday fan.”

It’s well-documented that owner Dejphon Chansiri and Rohl haven’t seen eye to eye, and that is a major worry for all connected to the club.

Naturally, that will bring doubts about his future, and most would agree that the club would need to outline their vision and long-term plan in order to convince Rohl to stay as he tries to build a long-term project.

Ultimately, Chansiri is the only man that can do that, and whilst Rohl may stick around for this season, you do get the feeling that things need to change if he is to stay at Hillsborough for the next few years.
