You only had to look at the performance of Manchester City in yesterday’s FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace to see what Pep Guardiola’s squad needs. They need creativity and legs in midfield. Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were the only two midfielders selected by Guardiola for yesterday’s match. There is a lack of creativity in City’s midfield. That stood out yesterday. On that front, it does seem that Florian Wirtz and Tijjani Reijnders are the players City will target to improve this area of their squad. Now, a new report indicates that Manchester City are eager to sign both players ahead of the Club World Cup.

Manchester City appear intent on doing their business early this summer.

Simon Mullock has reported for The Express that Manchester City are prepared to spend £180 million to sign Florian Wirtz and Tijjani Reijnders ahead of the Club World Cup. Furthermore, Mullock reports that Pep Guardiola would like signings to arrive before City jet off to the United States. Mullock adds that Bayer Leverkusen would demand over £100 million to sell Wirtz. AC Milan would expect a transfer fee of over £56.3 million to sell Reijnders as per Mullock’s report.

City appear to be moving quickly to fill their biggest need.

You only have to watch Manchester City’s past two games to see what they are screaming out for. Creativity in midfield is lacking in Pep Guardiola’s squad. There is an over-reliance on Kevin De Bruyne. That has stood out as Manchester City have been held goalless by Southampton and Crystal Palace in their past two matches. Wirtz and Reijnders are players who would fill this void.

If Manchester City could land the pair ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, that would be ideal. That way, they can be integrated into Pep Guardiola’s squad ahead of next season. If that eventuates it would almost be the ideal summer transfer window for Manchester City. But first they must get the approval of Florian Wirtz that he wants to move to the Etihad. That decision could come this week. The sooner it arrives the more apparent City’s summer transfer plans will become.
