Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool in the summer when his contract expires. He is expected to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Since announcing his exit, Alexander-Arnold has been subject of criticism from the Liverpool fans. He was audibly booed during the club’s previous home fixture against Arsenal.

However, the 26-year-old was greeted positively as Liverpool’s title celebrations got underway on Sunday. An emotional Alexander-Arnold had been in tears at full-time and responded to his ovation by kissing the Liverpool badge.

“I didn’t know what to expect. Stepping out at Anfield, after what had happened a few weeks ago,” Alexander-Arnold reflected to Sky Sports.

“I wanted to play for the club one more time. He trusted me to go out there, the reception means more than anything for me.

“I’ve played hundreds of games, but I never felt more loved and cared for than today. I hope one day, the fans and supporters will be able to recognise the hard work I’ve done for the team. there wasn’t a day I didn’t think of the team.

“From six years old to now, 20 years is a long time. I’ve loved every single minute of it, the academy to the first team, it’s been an honour and a privilege. It’s all I’ve ever known.”
