Ruben Amorim has admitted Manchester United’s defeat in the Europa League final will impact the club’s transfer plans this summer.

Manchester United missed the chance to secure silverware and Champions League qualification after losing to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.

Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal sealed success for Spurs, a first major trophy in 17 years for the North London outfit.

Despite dominating the possession at the San Mames Stadium, it was an uninspiring performance from the Red Devils in a forgettable final. United lacked threat, fashioning few chances.

Rasmus Hojlund’s header was cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven, while Guglielmo Vicario made good saves from Alejandro Garnacho and Luke Shaw in the closest Amorim’s side came to a breakthrough.

United will not play European football next season and Amorim hinted that the absence of Champions League football will limit the club’s spending power in the summer market.

“We have two plans for the market and we have to understand it is tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League,” he said at full-time.

“But we have to use the other side. We have more time to work during the week on the Premier League and that will be our focus.”

Amorim insists he won’t quit Manchester United

The defeat continues a torrid start for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, who sit 16th in the Premier League table and will end the season without silverware.

Despite the pressure on his position, the 40-year-old has insisted he will not walk away.

“If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy then I will go tomorrow with no compensation. But I will not quit.”
