Andre Onana has not been included in the Manchester United squad to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park today.
Onana has not travelled with the squad for the Premier League clash, amid a difficult week for the Cameroon international. The 29-year-old was at fault for both goals during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Thiago Almada’s free-kick evaded everyone, including Onana, for the opening goal, before the United ‘keeper parried Corentin Tolisso’s effort in stoppage time, allowing Rayan Cherki to score the rebound.
Ahead of the game, Onana had been involved in a verbal spat with Lyon midfielder and ex-United player Nemanja Matic. The Serbian branded Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history” after comments the goalkeeper made about Lyon.
It’s unclear whether Onana has been dropped from the side or rested ahead of the second leg, with United’s primary focus on success in Europe.
Altay Bayindir will replace Onana in goal at Newcastle and make his Premier League debut. Onana had previously played every minute of Manchester United’s league fixtures since his arrival from Inter Milan in 2023.
