Reds flying high in Premier League and Champions League after moving on from Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has admitted his father called him to say the win over Lille on Tuesday wasn’t “exciting”.

The Reds sealed their progress to the Champions League round of 16 in March as Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott scored in a 2-1 victory for Liverpool against the French outfit.

Slot’s side sit top of the Champions League and Premier League tables after a remarkable first season under the Dutchman.

Liverpool are the highest scores in the Premier League this season (50) but have naturally slightly changed their style of play after the departure of Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season.

While Klopp also developed his brand of football throughout his time at Anfield, the German is widely recognised for the “heavy metal” approach he installed at both Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

Slot’s side will be strongly expected to pick up another big victory when Liverpool play Ipswich at home on Saturday but the Reds boss stresses his team won’t be taking any big risks, with the focus instead on control.

Asked if fans can expect a big scoreline, Slot said: “No, that is difficult for fans and my father is a fan as well and when I call him after the game he can also say, oh it wasn't as exciting as other games of Liverpool when he watched the game against Lille.

"And then I have to try to explain to him that these games you can easily lose if you're starting to force all kinds of difficult balls. But he's not always agreeing with me then.

"As a manager, I was quite happy with our performance against Lille because they were a team that are so well organised and so much control.

"There was one moment in the game I can remember that Curtis (Jones) tried to play, at the halfway line, a ball that was a bit of risk and we lost that ball and they counter-attacked us.

"That's the risk you have if you play against a low-block team. Forest is probably the best in the league if you play these stupid balls, which I call stupid balls, which my father would love to see us playing a bit more.”
