Reds have decision to make over highly-rated forward after latest fitness setback

Arne Slot has admitted that Diogo Jota’s latest injury setback could factor into a decision on Jayden Danns’ immediate Liverpool future.

The Premier League leaders could be without Jota - who scored an equaliser just 22 seconds after coming on against high-flying Nottingham Forest in midweek - for Saturday’s trip to Brentford after the Portuguese international missed training on Thursday with an unspecified knock.

Jota previously sat out almost two months between October and December with a rib problem sustained against Chelsea and, though his latest issue is not long-term, Slot has conceded that his fitness issues could be a consideration when deciding whether or not to loan out Danns this month.

The 19-year-old forward - son of former Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns - is highly-rated at Anfield, but is far down in the attacking pecking order and made just one senior appearance under Slot so far - coming off the bench to quickly score the third goal in last weekend’s 4-0 home victory over fourth-tier Accrington Stanley in the third round of the FA Cup, having replaced exciting debutant Rio Ngumoha.

Reports this week have suggested that Liverpool will consider a temporary exit for Danns, who looked set to be loaned out in the summer only to suffer a stress fracture in his back during pre-season.

Championship side Stoke are among the clubs to be linked with the player after Leicester triggered their option to recall striker Tom Cannon early from his season-long loan spell at the Bet365 Stadium.

Asked about Jota’s latest injury affecting the Danns decision, Slot said before the trip to Brentford: “I think you take a lot of things into account if you want to loan out a player and this could be one of them, but there are also other factors you have to take into account. Is it good for a player to get some playing time, yes or no? Do we still need him?

“We do already have three options for the No9 position and it's not now that we expect Jota to be out for a long period of time. So, it will be a struggle to have him on the pitch maybe on Saturday, tomorrow, but we are hoping to see him on the pitch in the near future again.

“We have three options but Jayden did really well when he came in, so we have, actually, four options and then it is up to us as a club to make the best possible decision for the near future but also for the long-term future of this club.”
