Arsenal have identified Andrea Berta as a candidate to become the club’s new sporting director.

The Gunners have been on the hunt for a permanent replacement for Edu, who resigned in November to take up a role with Nottingham Forest owner’s Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs.

Jason Ayto, who had worked alongside Edu, has taken on the role on an interim basis since then, but executive vice-chair Tim Lewis and managing director Richard Garlick have been leading the search for a new sporting director.

Berta has been out of work since he left Atletico Madrid in January, having been at the club for more than a decade.

The Italian arrived at Atletico in 2013 to work with the scouting department, but progressed to become technical director and then in 2017 he was appointed sporting director.

It is understood that no offers have yet been made by Arsenal in their current search, but reports in Italy suggest that Berta is emerging as the Gunners’ top target after rejecting other approaches.

Berta has been linked with AC Milan, but according to Gazzetta dello Sport he has turned down the Serie A club.

Milan had Berta on a three-man shortlist, along with Fabio Paratici and Igli Tare, but have given up on Berta after being led to believe he was set to join Arsenal.
