Arsenal are interested in a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves in the January transfer window.

Mikel Arteta has tracked the progress of the forward for several seasons and interest has accelerated following injuries to Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling.

Cunha scored one and created another as Wolves beat Manchester United on Thursday evening and has emerged as a talismanic figure for the Midlands outfit. He has scored 10 goals and provided four assists in 18 league appearances this season.

This season, he ranks among the Premier League’s top players for goal involvements (5th), non-penalty goals (4th), shot-creating actions (10th), successful take-ons (5th) and fouls drawn (7th).

Arteta is keen to add another option to his forward line with Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus struggling for consistency during the current campaign.

The absence of Saka, who is set for an extended spell on the sidelines, has ramped up interest in additions next month. According to the Telegraph, Arsenal have monitored Cunha’s progress for the last three seasons.

However, Wolves are unlikely to sell the 25-year-old in the winter window and would demand a huge fee for the player. Cunha cost a club-record £44m when arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2023.

Speaking after the win over Manchester United, new Wolves manager Vitor Pereira called Cunha a ‘leader’ of his side: “He’s very important. Very important. His standard is a high level player.

“We need high level players, we need him. I hope he can help us every game. He is a good boy, a good person and he is also a leader inside the team.”
