Arsenal drew a blank against Nottingham Forest, falling further behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race.
The Gunners huffed and puffed but could not break down a resilient Nottingham Forest side that was happy to take a point and hold on to third place on the league log.
To make matters worse for Arsenal, Liverpool capitalised on their slip-up, beating Newcastle United 2-0 to extend their lead at the summit to 13 points.
The Reds are practically champions in waiting with 10 games left to play, but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has refused to throw in the towel.
On the title race, Arteta said (via the BBC), “It was same a week ago, two weeks ago, three months ago. The only thing we can do is win our matches and see how many points we get.”
“Today we dropped two points, which is very painful again, and we have to step up.”
Arsenal need to bring their A-game to chase down Liverpool, but it looks next to impossible with the Reds running away with the title. As much as Arteta wants to cut a defiant figure to inspire his side to keep pushing, they do not have enough in the tank to catch Arne Slot’s men.
Arsenal turn their attention to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League, a chance, no matter how little, of salvaging something from another nearly season.
Arsenal will back themselves to pip the Dutch team to a place in the quarter-final. After the first leg of their European showdown, the Gunners attempt to keep their faint title hopes alive when they travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
The record books do not favour Arsenal, with the Gunners winning only two of their last 17 trips to Manchester since April 2008. The Red Devils are not in the best shape but can cause this brittle Arsenal side problems.
