Atletico Madrid are interested in re-signing Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United.

The Spanish side are weighing up a move for the 20-year-old, who was part of the club’s youth system before moving to the Premier League in 2020.

Garnacho has started the season in good form and has seven goals and four assists from 11 starts for the Red Devils across all competitions.

Spanish outlet Fichajes are claiming that Atletico are lining up a bid for the Argentina international and will keep a close eye on Garnacho’s role under incoming head coach Ruben Amorim.

The former Sporting CP manager has officially taken charge at Old Trafford this week and has favoured a formation without traditional wingers in Lisbon.

Garnacho failed to celebrate his goal against Leicester at the weekend with Bruno Fernandes revealing his teammate felt he had ‘lost the faith’ of the fans of late. It followed an incident in which a supporter filmed himself criticising Garnacho as he left the ground following Thursday’s win over PAOK.

Ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand this week defended the winger on his YouTube channel: “I’ve got a stat here… none of these players have more goals and assists this season than Garnacho: [Bukayo] Saka, [Ousmane] Dembele, [Kylian] Mbappe, [Rafael] Leao, Nico Williams, Michael Olise, Phil Foden,” Ferdinand relayed on his FIVE podcast.

“And this is how this guy is talking to him… absolute fool.”

Garnacho has made 104 appearances for Manchester United since his senior debut and is contracted to the club until 2028.

He was born in Madrid and represented Spain at u-18 level before pledging his international allegiance to Argentina, his mother’s nation. He won the Copa America with La Albiceleste in the summer.
