Barcelona sporting director Deco is taking major steps to secure the future of the current squad.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo, he is focused on the ‘shield operation’, which is to renew the contracts of players whose deals run out in 2026.
His aim is to build long-term stability around a strong core of players, avoiding situations where key members enter the final year of their contracts without clarity.
Club president Joan Laporta has made his position clear that he does not want to head into the next season with players entering the last year of their contracts.
This is why Deco is following the policy closely, working behind the scenes to tie down several important names.
In defence, there is still work to be done. Jules Kounde’s deal runs until 2027, so he is not a pressing concern.
However, with the club needing four reliable centre-backs, Inigo Martinez’s future is on the table. His contract ends in 2026, and the plan is to offer him a one-year extension.

Eric Garcia and reserve team talent Andres Cuenca are in similar positions and require clarity soon. Meanwhile, Andreas Christensen’s situation is uncertain as he could be sold during the summer window.
In midfield, the big question is about Frenkie de Jong. His deal also ends in 2026, but he wants to stay at the club.
Talks are ongoing, and the Dutchman’s improved relationship with the club, plus his efforts to stay fit, have helped keep negotiations smooth.
Up front, Pablo Torre’s situation remains unclear. He has expressed his desire to stay, but his current status in the team could force the club to consider a contract extension if they want to avoid losing him on a free.
On the other hand, Robert Lewandowski is in a more secure spot, with support from everyone at the club.
With limited finances, Deco’s work will be key to keeping the team strong without heavy spending. Extending contracts now could save Barcelona from major problems later and ensure stability across the pitch.
