Andreas Christensen has received medical clearance and is now available for selection under Hansi Flick after Barcelona confirmed his recovery from a muscle injury.

The Danish defender has struggled with injuries in recent months, and both he and his new coach are hoping that this time he can return to the squad without any further setbacks.

For Flick, integrating Christensen into his tactical setup remains somewhat uncertain, as he has not yet had the opportunity to use him regularly.

His role in the team is far from guaranteed, and he faces a challenge to earn a prominent position in the starting XI.

Defence is overcrowded

One of the main reasons Christensen will find it difficult to establish himself in the squad is the fierce competition in both central defence—his primary position—and the defensive midfield role, where he featured towards the end of last season under Xavi.

In the heart of the defence, Hansi Flick has been relying on the partnership of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez.

The two centre-backs complement each other well, bringing different qualities to the backline while working efficiently to maintain the defensive line and implement the offside trap.

Ronald Araujo, the team captain, is another key figure in Barcelona’s defence and is the most likely to challenge the existing partnership. His leadership, physical presence, and aggressive defensive style make him a vital component in the squad.

Additionally, Eric Garcia remains a viable option, offering versatility as he is capable of stepping into the midfield when required.

At this stage, Christensen finds himself as the fifth-choice centre-back, which places him in a difficult position. To make matters more challenging, he is returning at a time when every match carries significant weight.

The fight is tougher than ever

Barcelona are in a relentless battle for the La Liga title, competing in the Champions League round of 16, and are also pushing for a place in the Copa del Rey final.

With no room for mistakes, Flick will need to be cautious with squad rotations, making it harder for Christensen to break into the starting eleven immediately.

Even if he looks towards the defensive midfield position as an alternative route into the team, the competition remains intense.

Marc Casado and Frenkie de Jong have been battling for that role, with the Dutchman currently being the preferred option due to his ability to distribute the ball effectively and dictate the tempo of play.

Christensen, on the other hand, is more of a traditional defensive player, offering physicality and positional awareness rather than technical brilliance.

His playing style is somewhat similar to Garcia’s in this role, but with a stronger physical presence and less emphasis on ball control and distribution.

How can Christensen make himself worthy?

Despite these challenges, it would be unwise to completely rule out Christensen’s chances of securing a role in Flick’s plans. The German coach appreciates experienced players who can provide stability in key moments, especially in a team filled with young talents.

Christensen, when fully fit, is a composed and intelligent defender known for his strong aerial ability and disciplined marking.

His calmness under pressure and tactical awareness could make him a useful asset in a system that demands defenders to take calculated risks.

At 28 years old, Christensen is at a stage in his career where he should be reaching his peak. What he needs most now is a consistent run of games to regain full confidence and sharpness.

Whether he can break into the starting lineup remains to be seen, but if he stays fit and takes his opportunities when they come, he could yet become an important figure for Barcelona in the crucial months ahead.
