Frenkie de Jong could be in line to start for Barcelona in their upcoming away UEFA Champions League match against Red Star Belgrade, according to a report from Toni Juanmarti in SPORT.
This would be a significant moment for the Dutch midfielder, marking his first start of the season after returning from a lengthy injury.
It must be noted that while Hansi Flick has a selection headache, particularly in the midfield area, de Jong’s recent performances suggest he is ready to play a key role.
At present, Flick is facing a challenge when it comes to finalising his starting lineup, especially with the number of midfield options at his disposal. However, the German needs to strike a balance between fielding a strong, competitive team and managing the physical demands on his players.
With so many talented midfielders available, it is clear that not everyone can fit into the starting XI. Tonight’s match against Red Star Belgrade, though, could provide de Jong with the opportunity to complete the final stage of his recovery and make his first start of the season.

Since his return from injury a month ago, de Jong has featured in five matches, eventually increasing his minutes on the pitch every time he features.
His performance in these matches has shown that he is regaining his fitness and form, putting him in a strong position for a starting role in Serbia.
His last start for Barcelona came in the high-stakes league El Clasico against Real Madrid on April 21, but since then, he has been working towards regaining his starting spot.
Should the Dutchman start, it is noted that either Pedri or Marc Casado would likely take up the second pivot role in midfield. Both players are in excellent form, but Flick’s approach to squad rotation means that no player is guaranteed a starting place.
He aims to ensure all his players maintain match fitness, which means he rotates his squad regularly. With a tough fixture against Real Sociedad coming up on Sunday, it is important for Barcelona to ensure they have fresh players ready for the challenge ahead.
