Gerard Martin is one of many La Masia talents looking to make a bigger breakthrough and follow in the footsteps of players like Pau Cubarsi and Alejandro Balde.
A left-back by trade, Martin is currently serving as the understudy for Balde in the wider defensive role. Although the youngster has featured in less than 1000 minutes of action this season, he has had a lot to learn from head coach Hansi Flick.
In a recent interview with Catalunya Radio, Martin even offered his thoughts on Hansi Flick and his management technique.
Answering the first question on what Flick expects when he enters the stadium, Martin responded, “I have to be very focused, give it my all, and take advantage of every opportunity I get to play.”
There is a general perception that Flick is a strict coach who tries to regulate players’ behaviour a lot, both on and off the pitch.

However, Martin, who was recently selected in the Spanish U21 squad, admitted that Flick, although strict at times, is not shy when it comes to showing appreciation.
“He congratulated me many times and told me I did a good job, but he also scolded me on some occasions,” he said.
Finally, Martin talked about Flick’s coaching technique, adding, “He is a coach who demands a lot from you.”
“But at the same time, he is someone who is there for you when you need to talk to him or tell him something. And that’s something we appreciate a lot,” he concluded.
Martin, even though not a regular starter, has earned Flick’s trust and proven himself to be a capable alternative for Alejandro Balde in the left-back position.
As such, it was not a surprise that the former Cornella left-back was one of the players whom the club handed a new contract earlier this year.
