Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi sustained an injury during Spain’s 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in the first leg of the Nations League quarter-finals last night.
The 18-year-old was replaced by Dean Huijsen just before half-time with an ankle issue.
Cubarsi adds to Barca’s injury woes, with Inigo Martinez and Marc Casado recently pulling out of the Spanish squad.
Martinez has been ruled out until the end of the month with the swollen knee he suffered in the 4-2 win against Atletico Madrid.
However, Spanish head coach Luis de la Fuente has issued a positive update on Cubarsi, stating that his injury appears to be only a sprain.
Cubarsi will likely miss the second leg on Sunday, with De la Fuente summoning Lazio centre-back Mario Gila as a potential replacement.
Real Madrid centre-back Raul Asencio, who was dropped from the squad last night, has a great opportunity to feature in the second leg against the Dutch.
Despite Nico William’s early strike for Spain, Oranje turned the tide with goals from Cody Gakpo and Tijjani Reijnders. But Mikel Merino saved Spain’s blushes with a late equaliser.
Barcelona will be anxious about Cubarsi’s fitness. He has been a pillar in the defence this season.
The prodigious centre-back has clocked up 42 appearances in all competitions this season, producing impressive performances consistently.
The Bluagrana have been in unstoppable form since the turn of the year. They top the La Liga table and have progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals.
But the growing injury list could impede their momentum in the most decisive part of the season.
