German record champions Bayern Munich are hoping to take a big step towards May’s Champions League Final in their home stadium on Tuesday night. Bayern welcome Simone Inzaghi’s Inter to the Allianz Arena for the first of two quarter-final legs.
Since falling to Bochum in the Bundesliga early last month, Vincent Kompany’s FCB are undefeated in four matches on-the-spin. That nevertheless means little in light of the team’s worsening injury issues, compounded by the recent loss of pivotal attacker Jamal Musiala.
Kompany revealed little about his personnel plans at today’s press conference, but a start for Thomas Müller in the ten slot in Kompany’s 4-2-3-1 does seem likely. Müller himself proclaimed himself fully devoted to the only club he’s ever served in an instagram message earlier today.
The Bayern team that beat Augsburg in the league last Friday night should remain unchanged, with the possible exception of Leon Goretzka returning to midfield over Joao Palhinha.
Raphaël Guerreiro might also start at left back while Josip Stanisic switches back over to his natural right hand side. Konrad Laimer – not a natural right back – put in a weak performance against the Fuggerstädter.
Bayern will be squaring off against their former keeper Yann Sommer, who deputised for the injured Manuel Neuer during the second half of the 2022/23 season. Sommer’s former Borussia Mönchengladbach teammate Marcus Thuram is also projected to start for the visitors.
Bayern Munich: Urbig – Laimer, Dier, Kim, Stanisic – Kimmich, Goretzka – Olise, Müller, Sane – Kane.
Inter: Sommer – Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni – Calhanoglu – Darmian, Barella, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco – Martinez, Thuram
