On Tuesday night at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich hosted Celtic in the second leg of the play-off round of the newly formatted UEFA Champions League. Having left Scotland, the previous week, with a 2-1 victory in the first leg, the Bavarian giants were expected to settle the tie in front of home fans convincingly.
However, as things would turn out, from Bayern's perspective, the home game was trickier than the first leg played at Celtic Park. In the end, Bayern somehow managed to avoid extra time thanks to a goal in added time from Alphonso Davies. The 1-1 draw was enough to end Celtic’s run in this season’s Champions League. However, Die Roten's performance on the night left a lot to be desired. Let's look at three players who proved to be the major difference makers for Bayern Munich as they just managed to make it over the finish line inside of regulation time on Tuesday.
Joshua Kimmich was Bayern’s standout player by quite some distance on Tuesday. Whilst the Bavarian side collectively struggled to deal with the pressure from Celtic, Kimmich was a steady presence in the midfield.
After he struggled against Leverkusen on the weekend, it was a relief to see Kimmich back to his usual reliable self. With mistakes in defense and a lack of sharpness in attack once again plaguing Bayern, Kimmich had to be on his game to avoid a disaster at the Allianz Arena.
Over 90 minutes plus added time the German Captain had 139 touches; completed 96% of his passes (114/119); created six chances and completed eight recoveries.
