Former Inter star Giuseppe Bergomi believes the Nerazzurri won’t be able to approach their remaining Serie A games with the same calmness shown in their last two outings, after Napoli’s home draw against Genoa reignited a Scudetto race that had seemed to be heading in a clear direction.

Back-to-back defeats against Bologna and Roma in recent weeks appeared to have ended Inter’s hopes of retaining the domestic title, prompting them to shift both their mental and physical focus to a gruelling two-legged Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.

That the final in Munich had become the Nerazzurri’s top priority was made all the more clear by Simone Inzaghi’s decision to field a heavily rotated starting XI against Torino on Sunday. However, with Inter now unexpectedly just one point behind the Serie A leaders, Bergomi expects a change in strategy.

Inter’s strategy must change after Napoli draw, says Bergomi

“In my opinion, things change now — this is a turning point,” Bergomi said during the Sky Calcio Club segment on Sky Sport Italia.

“Because in the last two matches, even with the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona in between, they played with 9 or 10 non-regular starters.

“Mentally, they were fairly light commitments, even though they approached them well: first against Verona, and today against Torino, it was a serious, well-played match.

“And now, I think they’re starting to really think about it. Napoli used up their bonus — they can’t afford to draw in Parma, they have to win. So now Inter will do everything they can to win these last two games.

“The psychological aspect changes. We’ll have to see what choices Inzaghi makes and how he manages his players.”

Antonio Conte’s side will travel to Parma next weekend, with Inter hosting Lazio.
