Attendances have dropped at Ewood Park so far this season

The 2023/24 Championship season proved to be a rather challenging one for Blackburn Rovers.

Initially, things started well for the Lancashire outfit under Jon Dahl Tomasson, with hopes that they could mount another push for a place in the play-offs early on.

However, form began to dip badly, and Rovers were soon dragged into a relegation battle, with Tomasson departing in early February.

John Eustace was brought in to replace him, and eventually guided the club to safety on the final day of the campaign.

One major issue for Blackburn during that season was home form, with the club winning just six of their 23 home league games at Ewood Park in that period.

But how has that affected home attendances for the club this season, when compared with the last?

Here, we've taken a look at the average attendance at Ewood Park during the current campaign and the previous one, in order to help find out.

Home attendances have dropped for Blackburn so far this season

It is now well over ten years since Rovers were last a Premier League club, during which time they averaged attendances of more than 20,000 at Ewood Park.

Those figures have dropped since the club fell into the Championship, and last season, there was an average of 14,902 people who attended each Blackburn home game, as per Transfermarkt.

It does though, appear that the struggles Rovers endured on their own soil last season, have impacted the number of people going to matches at the start of the current campaign.

According to Transfermarkt, there has been an average of 10,977 people attending matches at Ewood Park so far this season.

Given the ground has a capacity of 31,367, that figure is something of a sad one for those who know the proud history of the club.

However, those connected with the club will hope that form so far this season, will soon help to change that.

Rovers performing better on home soil this season

On the whole, results have been much better for Blackburn at Ewood Park at the start of the current campaign.

Despite the disappointment of a second Carabao Cup defeat to Blackpool, Eustace's side did win each of their first five home league games on home soil.

That was then followed by a respectable draw with West Brom, and then back-to-back defeats at Ewood Park.

Sheffield United though, were always going to be a tough proposition for most teams, while the clash with Stoke is one they will feel they should have taken something from.

A combination of some inspired goalkeeping from Viktor Johansson, and a flurry of missed chances that should have been taken, denied Blackburn in a 2-0 defeat to the Potters.

Even so, those connected with the club will no doubt be keen to see that general upturn in results and performances on home soil, also eventually lead to another rise in average attendances.

Indeed, with the club currently ninth in the Championship just three points adrift of the play-offs, there may be reason for more fans to return, if that form continues.
