Bolton Wanderers are heading into a vitally important summer transfer window after an underwhelming season in League One.

The Trotters could only muster an eighth-placed finish in the third tier this season, which is a notable step backwards from their third and fifth-placed campaigns over the last two terms.

The mid-season sacking of Ian Evatt and the subsequent appointment of Steven Schumacher in January didn't have the complete desired effect, with Wanderers ultimately falling 10 points short of a play-off place.

As such, a hugely important summer transfer window awaits the club, as Schumacher looks to construct a squad that can right the wrongs of this season, and get back to being a real promotion contender in League One next year.

"I can see why" - Transfer claim made on Bolton Wanderers striker - Stoke City star name-dropped

One such Wanderers player who could be on the chopping block this summer is striker Victor Adeboyejo, after a disappointing season for the Nigerian centre-forward.

We asked our Bolton Wanderers fan pundit, Liam O'Meara: 'With just three goals in 27 League One appearances this past season, is it time for Bolton to upgrade on Victor Adeboyejo in the summer transfer window?'

O'Meara said: "Bolton will probably have to look in the market for a Victor Adeboyejo, not necessarily replacement or upgrade, but the problem is he's going to be out until winter with a very serious injury.

"So, Bolton are going to be going in light at that position, and yes the stats don't look great with regards to what he's scored in his previous games, but even regardless of whether they want to keep him or not, we are light in that position.

"He's not going to be playing until then. So, Bolton absolutely, definitely, need to look at that as an option. I can see why we're linked with players like Niall Ennis, who Steven Schumacher has worked with before.

"It makes complete sense."

Bolton may require a more impactful backup striker than Victor Adeboyejo if they want League One promotion

As O'Meara discussed, Bolton will surely be looking to bolster their centre-forward ranks this summer regardless of Adeboyejo's situation.

With Kion Etete returning to parent club Cardiff City following his disappointing loan spell, Wanderers are now left with just Aaron Collins, John McAtee and returning loanee Dan Nlundulu as the only natural and senior centre-forwards at the club.

Given Schumacher tends to deploy numerous forwards in attack, having good strength in depth in their attacking ranks is of great importance for Bolton.

Having quality and impactful players to turn to from the bench, and to play starting roles in times of injury and when rotation is required, is an essential ingredient to any successful team.

However, given Adeboyejo was only able to bag three league goals in 27 appearances this term, there are sure to be questions asked as to whether he can play that sort of role moving forward.

Stoke City's Ennis, on the other hand, has certainly proven himself to be an impactful marksman at League One level, as Football League World exclusively revealed in early May that Bolton are in the race to sign the 25-year-old striker this summer.

Having scored seven times and provided two assists in 19 third tier appearances whilst on loan at Blackpool during the second half of this past season, he's also hit double-figure goals at this level previously for Plymouth Argyle.

Therefore, the Potters striker could be a considerable upgrade on Adeboyejo, and help Bolton field one of the most deep and talented attacking units in the third tier next term.
