FC Barcelona faced a bump in their form ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League match in the first leg of the quarter-finals against Borussia Dortmund as they could muster only a draw against Real Betis in La Liga at the Montjuic.
Meanwhile, their rivals in the UCL, Dortmund, had a good weekend as they beat Freiburg 4-1 and will thus come into the European tie with their spirits quite high.
However, playing against the Blaugranes will not really be easy for the Germans. This is not only because of the quality that the Catalans possess and the form they have shown up to now, but also because Niko Kovac will be without some of his key players for this game.
As Mundo Deportivo has noted, Dortmund will be without three important players for this game against Barcelona, i.e., the defender Niklas Sule and the midfielders Marcel Sabitzer and Pascal Gross.
Sule and Sabitzer are both injured, and thus will be unable to play on Wednesday, while Gross is suspended for this game because of yellow card accumulation.
These three players are ruled out for this game, but there is another player, Rami Bensebaini, who is also a doubt as he was subbed out of the match against Freiburg with some physical problems. Thus, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to play on Wednesday.
On the other hand, Kovac will recover the defender Nico Schlotterbeck after he missed the last Bundesliga game due to a yellow card accumulation.
Thus, despite the three important absences, the Germans will be able to field a strong lineup when they take on Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. Thus, the tie promises to be a highly entertaining affair, especially as Dortmund has won their last two games in the league, and will be looking to maintain a winning run and repeat their last year’s UCL run right to the final.
