Brendan rallies behind key Celtic duo after Cup Final loss | OneFootball

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has praised Callum McGregor after his miss in the penalty shootout defeat to Aberdeen. After a number of penalties were substituted, McGregor stepped up and took the first penalty but it was denied by Mitov.

After suffering his first defeat in a final, McGregor was dismayed after the game and was consoled by his manager. Speaking to the media conference at Hampden, Rodgers was full of praise for his skipper.

“He’s such a conscientious guy who gives so much to this club. As the skipper, he’s obviously so disappointed he hasn’t scored.

“I was just reminding him what an incredible leader he is for this club. He’s given so much to this season and to all the seasons that I’ve ever known him. He is such an amazing guy.

“It’s unfortunate the keeper makes the saves. But no, he’ll come back in the summer stronger, fitter and ready to go again.”

The manager also came out in support of Kasper Schmeichel, who’s uncharacteristic blunder allowed Aberdeen back into the game with less than ten minutes remaining.

“He’s obviously apologetic to his teammates, but he’s been outstanding for us all season.

“It was one of those moments in the game late on that can happen. We still had one or two other chances that we could have scored from, but, yes, it was just unfortunate at that time of the game.”

Celtic were lacklustre in their display and it wasn’t through Schmeichel and McGregor. The attacking contingent failed to show their best form but the tempo was lacking this afternoon. Brendan was gracious in defeat and he will be keen for his side to strengthen this summer after appearing to be running on fumes since the exit to Bayern Munich.
