AC Milan’s performance during last night’s loss against Bayer Leverkusen is generating polarising opinions, and Fabio Capello expressed some doubts about what he saw.

Milan fell to their second defeat in two games in the Champions League last night as they lost 1-0 against Bayer Leverkusen, but it was a match with controversy as Paulo Fonseca’s side can feel unlucky not to have been awarded at least one penalty.

Nonetheless, the facts of the game are that Victor Boniface got the only goal early in the second half after the home side had dominated the first 45 minutes. It took that opener to provoke a response and the Rossoneri fashioned several chances in the final half-hour but couldn’t take any.

Capello covered the game alongside Zvonimir Boban – who had some very harsh words on the performance – as a pundit for Sky, and his assessments were relayed by MilanNews24.

“Milan had some big chances in the second half. After Bayer’s goal, the team woke up. But you can’t always concede goals to have a reaction,” he said.

“I would especially analyse the first part of the match, understand why we weren’t on the pitch, why we allowed Bayer Leverkusen to be the master of the pitch and create so many goal-scoring opportunities because Maignan saved so many shots. They showed up in front of goal and shot wide. In the second half, something was missing.

“This team leaves me with some doubts: there were problems on the wings, so perhaps playing with 3 in midfield would help to filter more. When they started again, there was a line of 4 players very far forward and two midfielders alone. I think playing with 3 could improve.

“Morata’s entrance has given his teammates a boost. When you have people like him, you want to give something more, make the difference. And then let’s give Leao a wake-up call.

“I think it’s the most difficult thing and above all I didn’t like one thing about Leao: he gesticulated every time he started and then didn’t receive the ball. The gesticulating means that the teammate who had the ball made a mistake and highlights this situation.”
