Carlos Augusto insists Inter do not fear Barcelona or the ominous prospect of finishing the season without a single trophy. During a post-match press conference, Augusto delivered his verdict on a dismal 1-0 home defeat to Serie A high-flyers Roma.
Matias Soule’s first-half goal sealed Roma’s second win in their last three away matches against Inter. Meanwhile, Simone Inzaghi’s men have suffered three defeats on the trot in all competitions, including an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Milan in midweek Coppa Italia action.
“They are a great team. When you chase, you have to spend a lot of energy,” the Inter wingback said. “We were a bit unlucky, but we have to see what we did wrong to recharge, given the importance of the game we will have on Wednesday.
“We also have the quality to come back from a game like this, but Roma did well to stay closed, and we didn’t take advantage of the chances that came our way. Today, we gave everything, but you can’t always overturn games like this.
“We gave our hearts to win, but we didn’t succeed. We will try to start again and will give everything to win the Champions League semi-final.”
Inter must not dwell on recent slumps as they take on Barcelona in the first leg on Wednesday. Augusto urged his teammates to bounce back from today’s underwhelming result and prepare for the upcoming trip to the Iberian Peninsula.
“We lost three games and are sorry because we have come to play a lot at this time of the season, and we must not give up.” the Augusto added. “We still play a lot, we know how difficult it will be, but we have to stay united within the team and look forward.
“The next one is as fascinating as it is difficult, but we will do everything to bring it home. Many times these games also prepare themselves, but we have to recover physically and mentally. We will prepare, as always, to go to Barcelona and put in a great performance,” the Inter ace concluded.
