Celtic are closing in on another treble this season. The League Cup is already in the cabinet. They have a 13-point lead in the Premiership as well despite losing the recent Glasgow Derby against the Rangers at Parkhead. And the Hoops are also in the Scottish Cup semi-finals. Now, it is about getting over the finish line.
Of course, winning trebles has not been rare for Celtic in their recent history. But has any of it come easy?
Ange Postecoglou is one manager who has won a treble with Celtic. He would leave the club days after achieving that feat to become Tottenham Hotspur boss. It started well for the Australian in London but things have fallen apart over time. His Spurs side currently sit at 14th in the Premier League.
Harry Redknapp was recently discussing Postecoglou's struggles at Tottenham Hotspur. And Celtic fans will find some of his comments disrespectful. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he told WeAreTottenhamTV:
"When they were looking for a manager last year, I thought he was possibly the man for the job.“I stuck him up. I would like to see him be given the opportunity and he did well at Celtic, which isn’t hard because there are only two teams in Scotland, anyway, but he did a good job.“He was my choice really for the job. I thought he would be. But it hasn’t gone great, we have to be truthful. It has been a bit of a disaster really. I hope he can turn it around. Keep the job and have another go next year. That’s what I like to see happen."
Redknapp appears to believe that it is not hard to do well at Celtic because there are only two teams in Scotland. Well, that logic would work for a lot of teams and leagues around Europe.
Are there only two teams in Spain? Did not Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga on eleven straight occasions very recently? That has never been achieved in Scotland. What about the Italian league and what Juventus achieved there not too long ago?
Winning anywhere is difficult. Especially at a club like Celtic, where there is the pressure to win almost every game.
Then one has to look at the circumstances under which Postecoglou achieved his success at Celtic. When he had come in, the club were at rock bottom, having finished trophyless and 25 points behind the Rangers in the league in the previous season. On top of that, key players like Scott Brown, Odsonne Edouard, Kris Ajer, Ryan Christie and more left that summer.
Postecoglou deserves immense credit for what he achieved at Celtic. And it is not like he is the only one to have struggled at Tottenham Hotspur. Did that not happy with other proven winners like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte as well?
What about Nuno Espirito Santo? He lasted just 17 games in the Tottenham Hotspur job but currently has Nottingham Forest in third in the Premier League.
